ULRIKA SPACEK MIMI PRETEND

London fivesome Ulrika Spacek fully embody the DIY spirit. For example, their second album Modern English Decoration, due out 2 June via indie label Tough Love, was recorded solely within the shared house, with bathrooms, bedrooms and other spaces each providing different backdrops for their self-recording, self-mixing and self-production. The effect is a piece of work that is truly representative of the band themselves. The first fit for consumption is 'Mimi Pretend' and it is true to their intuitive psych sound. Murky and filled with spiralling riffs, they bend the lines of the traditional song with melodies hazing in and out of focus. Heading out with Slowdive next month, we think it is a match made in heaven. - SJ
